Daffodils make me smile and remind me another season is coming. This piece was first published in Clouds, Dreams and Fantasy Copyright Β© 2023. (available on Amazon).
I seldom date my pieces. However, the spring of 2020 was the beginning of the Covid Pandemic and all the changes it brought to the world.
Happy Spring! Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section.
Between Life and Death
Spring 2020
by Linda L. Flynn
I cut my firstΒ
bunch of daffodilsΒ
before Easter.Β
It snowed during the night.Β
The blooms left for laterΒ
bent under the weight.
Buds not yet openΒ
succumbed to theΒ
morning snow.
My bunch of daffodilsΒ
in the living roomΒ
brought sunshine and the promiseΒ
of spring to come.
Iβve enjoyed thisΒ
bundle of blooms.Β
Iβve watchedΒ
the petals on these beautiful bloomsΒ
first become paper thin.Β
Still beautiful,Β
but the truthΒ
of their fragilityΒ
is now evident.
A few more daysΒ
and the edges of those paper bloomsΒ
are dry and wrinkled,Β
some have turned a darker color,Β
others just became more fragile.Β
How like us.
We bud and bloom,Β
bringing sunshine and promiseΒ
to those around us.Β
Our lives bring beauty to some.Β
Like these blossoms,Β
we donβt even recognizeΒ
the gradual processΒ
of becoming more fragile.Β
Our bones are
more brittle,Β
muscle strengthΒ
steadily disappears,Β
our skin becomesΒ
more translucent,Β
and our hair thins.Β
Like my daffodils,Β
we often failΒ
to recognizeΒ
these changes untilΒ
something happens.Β
Last night brought oneΒ
of those happenings.Β
I feel likeΒ
I should howlΒ
and be in dissent.
Today, Iβm weary and wonder,Β
what is this time all about?

Very lovely daffodils π
The brevity of life!
